St. Louis, Missouri (May 2, 2018)—The College Board, a non-profit organization that promotes access to higher education, created the Advanced Placement (AP) program to familiarize high school students with college coursework before they graduate. The courses cover all the essential subjects such as English, Mathematics, Social Science, Art, and Foreign Language, and some that are considered electives. Students receive a gradual transition into the type of studying and thinking they will be challenged with in college, but without the real-world pressure of a campus classroom. Mackler Associates is prepared to help high school students prepare for these tests in May.

The AP Exams are the endgame of the AP coursework, where students are tested on 5-point scale to determine a college qualification recommendation. A “1” on the scale warrants a “no recommendation,” which is a polite way to say the student might be better served at a trade school. A “4” and “5” rate “well qualified” and “extremely well qualified” on the scale. A “4” might be expected of a student hoping to attain an academic scholarship. In some instances, students who score a 4 or a 5 on an AP Exam will receive college credit, meaning the student can graduate faster, take a semester off, or use the time to take advanced classes. Along with the ACTs and the SATs the AP Exams are among the most important tests an aspiring college student will take as they finish high school.

Mackler Associates has been helping students prepare for AP testing and courses for thirty years. The AP Exam has a format that many grade-level students might not be used to, so Mackler provides insight into the formatting, time limits, and expected content they’ll face. The agency believes that many students and their parents make the mistake of believing they can “cram” for the AP Exam, when the best course is a consistent effort over a long period to build confidence, good habits, and to retain information. The underlying approach is to use their understanding of specified learning styles and their experience with simplified lessons to highlight strengths and fortify weaknesses. Mackler also endorses AP courses and exams because students who take at least two classes do markedly better in their freshman year in college.
