Insurance Truck Notes Trend Regarding Shortage of Drivers in Trucking Industry. Alarming news forcing select retailers to delay non-essential shipments or pay inflated rates to have products delivered on time.

Representatives of Insurance Truck, a California-based truck insurance wholesaler offering a software-oriented quoting system for MTC and auto liability, have been studying the effects of a current trend regarding a shortage of drivers in the trucking industry, observing the way this alarming reality is forcing select retailers to delay non-essential shipments or pay inflated rates to have products delivered on time. According to a report from the American Trucking Association, in excess of 70-percent of U.S. goods are transported by truck, yet the industry is in need of nearly 900,000 additional drivers to meet a demand that’s constantly rising.

“Indeed, it is truckers who drive the economy in America, but the industry has struggled to attract new drivers in recent years,” states an Insurance Truck senior company spokesperson. “Along with being a truck driver came a certain level of honor; they were considered the ‘knights of the road,’ if you will, and that sentiment has been lost somewhere along the way. Today, trucks are unfortunately portrayed in a negative light.”

The report from the ATA noted that the industry has suffered with a driver shortage for the past 15 years, pointing out that freight volumes dropped during the Great Recession, allowing the industry to meet demand with fewer drivers. However, when volumes recovered in 2011, the driver shortage became an issue again – in fact, according to an industry analysis studied by Insurance Truck representatives and conducted by DAT Solutions, only one truck was available for every 12 loads requiring to be shipped at the beginning of 2018, the lowest ratio since 2005.

Some of the reasons Insurance Truck analysis staff believe this shortage is occurring is because there’s an aging fleet of drivers, the industry relies heavily on male drivers (only six-percent of commercial truck drivers are women) and the fact that a trucker’s lifestyle is often deemed “less than ideal,” forcing them to be on the road for excessive periods of time and thus causing fatigue and undiagnosed sleep apnea.

As a truck insurance wholesaler for independent commercial agents, Insurance Truck offers help with regard to non-standard markets, hard-to-place risks and high-risk truck insurance. More information about Insurance Truck can be found at https://insurancetruck.com/.
